This weekend there is much patriotic fervor in the United States. It is wonderful to have political freedom. Flags are waving and fireworks are bursting. Also in churches, choirs are singing and sentimental videos are streaming. Pastors are proclaiming the joy of
knowing Christ and the true spiritual freedom only He brings. All of these personal privileges are worth celebrating, but let’s not forget about others.
While we indulge ourselves with merriment and barbecue, multitudes around the world are suffering from all manner of bondage, trafficking, and oppression. What shall we do for those less fortunate –have another hot dog?
The Prophet Amos said, “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” In other words, pray for a downpour of God’s goodness that will refresh the whole world!
The Prophet Isaiah admonished, “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.” God’s people are to seek the welfare of those the world abuses.
So have a wonderful weekend with family and loved ones. Give thanks for God and country. But when Tuesday morning comes, roll up your sleeves and think of the less fortunate. Consider the impoverished and victimized. What can be done for those whom Christ died to set free?
