This Preacher Plays Games

images-1.jpgWhen I was a kid I learned to play chess.  As a growing chess players  I am learning to think carefully before moving a chess piece.  The first solution is rarely the best.  The quickest way to lose a game is to move hastily. Think, rethink, and think again before moving.  This sort of deep thinking helps me as a student of the Bible.  There are treasures in the Bible both above and below the surface.  It is fairly easy to find the beauties on top of the printed page, but you have to mentally dig deep to find some gems. Here are a few suggestions for meaningful Bible study.

  1. Read the  passage over and over again.
  2. Read the passage in different translations.
  3. Pray over the passage.
  4. If possible, investigate the original languages.
  5. Cross check your preliminary conclusions with other Bible references.
  6. If possible, consult various commentaries.
  7. Above all, take time to really ponder and think deeply about the scripture and you will be surprised how the Lord will open your mind to new  understandings and valuable insights.
