When the people of Judah were exiled to Babylon some false prophets said they would be back home very soon, but Jeremiah correctly predicted that they would be banished for seventy years and therefore they should do two things:
Jeremiah 29:7
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
- “Seek the welfare of the city”
- “Pray to the Lord on its behalf”
That’s what we must do also. We know that in the end the Lord will retore us like he did the Bablyonian exiles, but in the meantime we must “seek the welfare of the city” and “pray to the Lord on its behalf.”
What can our churches do to help the city? Are there opportunities of service in the schools or local government? Can we help with the parks or parades? As the salt of the earth and the light of the world we must get out into the community and seek to be a blessing.
And we must “pray to the Lord on its behalf.” We must pray for all of the leaders and officials. We must pray for the businesses and neighborhoods. We must cover the city in a blanket of prayer.
Our mission field is right out our front door! Let’s go love them and pray for them in Jesus’ name!
