Mother Teresa said…. “The “least of my brethren” are the hungry and the lonely, not only for food, but for the Word of God; the thirsty and the ignorant not only for water, but also for knowledge, peace, truth, justice and love; the naked and the unloved, not only for clothes but also for human dignity; the unwanted; the unborn child; the racially discriminated against; the homeless and abandoned, not only for a shelter made of bricks, but for a heart that understands, that covers, that loves; the sick, the dying destitutes, and the captives, not only in body, but also in mind and spirit; all those who have lost all hope and faith in life; the alcoholics and dying addicts and all those who have lost God (for them God was but God is) and who have lost all hope in the power of the Spirit.”
What wise words to ponder today! Are you sharing the hope of Christ? Do you recognize the needs of people who don’t even seem needy? We must share the Word of God and testify about His power in our lives! Where do compassion and mercy fit into your busy schedule?
Yesterday at same day surgery as I waited for the Dr. to come let me know how Mitch was doing after surgery there was an obvious “poor man” that registered for surgery. He was alone and was notably uneducated and had poor reasoning skills. I noticed his pants were tattered with ragged edges and uneven lengths. He had obviously taken some very dull scissors and cut them above the ankle.
When the nurse called me back to recovery to get Mitch ready to go home. There was that lonely man. As the nurses gathered around him to mark the eye that needed a cataract removed I took a moment to pray for his well-being. I was moved with compassion and mercy by the sight of this poor man. I suppose the best thing I could do for him was to whisper a prayer for him.
Today, give God’s mercy and compassion to those who need it!
James 5:10-11….. “Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
