Self Control!

1 Peter 1:13-16…. “Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Prepare your minds for action!  Weak-minded people focused on the situations that life brings more times than not lack self-control. Why did I get hooked on pain pills? Why did I drink to much liquor? Why did I get divorced? Why did that friendship not work out? Why did I sell those drugs and get put into jail? Why did I steal that item at the store? The list goes on and on! You hear these sorts of issues on the news, and sometimes in the churches.

This scripture in 1 Peter states a very important fact: “PREPARE” your minds for action! Literally, that means we must seek the Lord every day in every decision and lean on His Holy Spirit to guide! We have a choice –to make right decisions or to become a follower of what the world offers!

We must turn from our “habits” and choose obedience! Preparing our minds means we should read the Bible asking God’s Spirit to convict us of our sins and to turn away from the old ways of living! It is never to late to turn around and to prepare our minds to take a purposeful action! Remember that every action does have a reaction!

John Chrysostom said….”All is in God’s power, but so that our free-will is not lost…It depends therefore on us and on Him. We must first choose the good, and then He adds what belongs to Him. He does not precede our willing, that our free-will may not suffer. But when we have chosen, then He affords us much help…It is ours to choose beforehand and to will, but God’s to perfect and bring to the end.”
