Boundaries Are Necessary

We live in a neighborhood where there are no fences between houses on the side or back. In fact there are very few fences in the entire neighborhood. But there are markers on the lawns where one property begins and the other ends. We once had a neighbor who had a dog. Yep, she would stand on her side of the lawn and watch her dog do his business in our front lawn. After a few times it was maddening! So I took a shovel and made a pile of her dog’s business onto her property. That is all it took! She realized she had crossed a very important boundary. That never happened again.

In friendships and relationships with people boundaries are very necessary because there are personal issues that need not be discussed. Primarily because most people do not respect the boundary of the conversation. Even when you ask people not to share personal information; sometimes they slip up and cross the line of confidentiality.

In every day life, we need boundaries to help us focus on what God desires we focus. Nonetheless there are people who have ideas that they can cross boundaries without permission or without respect for others.

You may be in a relationship, friendship that teeters on dysfunction because healthy boundaries are not set. I do not mean to build walls around yourselves but what I do mean is be on guard and be discerning at work, school, church, and in your neighborhood.

1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”
